During the Stifel Nicolaus 2013 Internet, Media and Communications Conference, EA’s chief financial officer, Blake Jorgensen revealed that although there are certainly more EA games in development for PS4 and Xbox One, Wii U is still getting some EA games.

Blake Jorgensen explained:

You know, I think Nintendo’s business was more [an] extension of their last console.

I think what the consumer will find is a lot more powerful gameplay with the new boxes that are coming out, and a lot of excitement, but it’ll remain to be seen as to the services associated with those as to how consumers decide which direction they might want to go.

Asked whether the Xbox One will accommodate people who perhaps play in their bedroom rather than their living room, Eagle replied: “Yes, absolutely. We use the living room almost as a moniker – that’s where we assume the best screen is in the house. But if you like to play in any other room in the house, the Xbox One will deliver the same quality of experience whatever the environment.”

I was not available when the Xbox One was announced, and was completely disconnected from the internet watching the movie The Great Gatsby with my class (quickie review, 3/5). When I got internet access again on the bus ride back to our school, I quickly showed my classmates the hardware design of the newly announced Xbox One. I showed six people, and all of them individually said the same word.

Why.

I will admit it, when I first saw the Xbox One, I thought it looked stupid. This is coming from someone who is in the Microsoft ecosystem as well, I own a Surface RT, Windows 8 PC, and an Xbox 360, as well as planning on purchasing a Windows Phone. After getting a closer look at the features of the One and the power of the system, I changed my view slightly. I thought, this system looks really cool, and if it only had the exclusive library to match that of the Playstation 4. While they did not show much, I later heard that there will be 15 exclusive titles released to the Xbox One within the next year. Okay Microsoft, I will bite. I am interested in this new console, as there so many reasons that it will fail. This has so much potential, but it could potentially flop harder than the Wii U’s projections, as at least the Wii U will have Super Smash Brothers. I am going to go over all the certain and the uncertain about the next Xbox, and why both of these outcomes are probable.

The good news out of this conference is that the next Xbox is a media center beast. I already called the Xbox 360 the worlds best media box, and it looks like the One is going to take this further with better Kinect functionality and live TV. Plus, there will be the already fantastic Smartglass functionality, and as far as I know, this has not been touched upon too much besides the fact that exists. The multitasking features and sharing features do look excellent, and I am excited to see how this machine works together with Windows 8. The new controller is not different, which ends up being a good sign, as the 360 controller is considered one of the best ever made next to the original DualShock, and it supports WiFi direct instead of that silly proprietary 2.4 GHz protocol, making for much faster and smoother gameplay with little button lag between presses and action input. I will also mention again that there will be 15 new exclusive games to the Xbox One within the next year (which means anytime from until December to next May), with 8 of them being new IP’s, so it seems Microsoft is trying to play hard against Sony’s library. To directly answer against IGN’s Game Scoop discussion asking whether exclusives still matter, the answer is yes, as if the Xbox One was a Madden and COD machine like the 360 was, no one would purchase it. I have done some research on to this, and have found that with casual consumers, during the current gen transition period, many are willing to make the switch to a different brand. I have friends who are huge Xbox fans, and are longing to switch to a PS4 for the next generation. Exclusives still matter, as they are the tiebreaker between similar devices.

Now for the bad news, and after contemplating, there seems to certainly be a lot. Lets get first to the physical box, which is undeniably an ugly machine. There is nothing elegant about this box as there is the new Xbox 360, it does not curve, and it does not look like a premium device. In all honesty, it looks like the developer kit that they give out to disguise the machine as a normal PC, and they slapped the Xbox logo on it. Next up is the Kinect, which to clarify, I think the improved Kinect will do wonders to the overall experience, however the bad news is that the Kinect is mandatory for the Xbox to work. If you wonder why this is bad, ask yourself, have you ever brought a Wii over to a friend’s house and forgot the sensor bar? This leaves the console nonfunctional even for Gamecube games which do not require said sensor bar. The only relief in this is that the box is so big and ugly I doubt you will be bringing it over to a friend’s house. Then there is the lack of backwards compatibility, which I am not unbelievably worried about, as the system is more than powerful enough to emulate both of its predecessors, and if not, their Windows Azure cloud services might just be. The last, and worst feature has to do with used games. A while ago I wrote that Microsoft will not block used games being played on your console, and for the most part I was right, however, they did the next worst thing,<del> as they reported that you must pay money to play a used game. This is the Achilles heel of the One, as this “feature” alone could entirely break the system. This is exactly what Sony or Nintendo wants to boost their sales, as this invalidates the rights of the consumer to resell their product and play it on another system.</del>

The next Xbox could be a giant success or a giant mess, and now neither is predictable. All of its flaws can be forgiven with a good library of games, except for the used games fee which could entirely break the system. I would not want to buy a system that does not allow for titles as this does, and I doubt the populous will either if Sony advertises this as they did with the PS3′s “Free online” commercials. Don’t forget that Xbox Live Gold costs money as well, and that by keeping this a required subscription to play online games during the transition period, Microsoft is at a disadvantage, and at a great risk to the Xbox franchise. They need to get their act together to beat Sony, as at least for the gamer, Sony has the killer lineup, console, and online features, to take the gold in the 8th generation console race. Only time will tell.

UPDATE: Microsoft Support has confirmed that the fee for used games is false. There has been some jabber about the topic, but the support guys I will give them credit, they certainly have the best social networking support out of any company out there, and I am happy that this feature was confirmed as un true. Now once I see the PS4 and One lineups at E3, it should be fair to compare them against each other. Unless any news or rumors come out before then, that is when I will release my next iRant. See you all then!
