GVN Staff’s Predictions For Sony’s Future of PlayStation Event

Luis Alamilla

Earlier this week Sony released a video and invite to what they’re calling “The Future of PlayStation” event. The event takes place on February 20th on 6:00pm EST in New York City. Sony invited the press and even investors to the even hinting at some major PlayStation news being announced. Just about everyone is expecting Sony to announce their next generation home console, the PlayStation 4. Here at GVN, we decided it would be fun to share the writing staff’s opinions/predictions on what and how Sony will be announcing things on February 20th.

Luis Alamilla

Luis Sony is not only inviting the press to this event but investors as well. This leads me to believe that Sony will be announcing at least something PlayStation 4 related. I think Sony will pull a Nintendo with the PS4 on February 20th. We’ll get a partial reveal of the PS4. Most likely we’ll see the actual console, the new controller, and a couple of tech demos. I think Sony will show off a partially change PS4 controller. I think it will retain a similar design to the dualshock 3 controller but with some changes, possibly some sort of touchscreen/touchpad similar to the PlayStation Vita. I don’t think we’ll see any actual game reveals at this press event. In the case that Sony does make some game announcements, I would expect Sony to announce what they’re first party titles are working on for PS4 but we won’t get full game reveals with actual gameplay and demos until E3 2013. Overall I expect to see a partial PS4 announcement but we won’t see details regarding actual tech specification and price until E3 2013. Same thing goes for game reveals, we’ll probably see some titles get announced for PS4 but we won’t see actual gameplay until E3 2013.

vanMy predictions for the announcement, are different from those of others. If the PS4 will be announced, it will not be a lone announcement. Similar to Nintendo’s Direct conference a little while ago, Sony’s Playstation Vita is experiencing a software drought, and needs a steady flow of games. I believe this conference will also announce some of the titles we can expect in the summer.

When I saw the announcement video it felt that possibly the PS Move could be an integral part of the announcement of the PS4.  Also they used the four iconic PlayStation buttons so Sony could possibly just call it PS4 instead of Obris. I predict it will come with an integrated form for their new PS move. I don’t think any company wants multiple SKUs of controllers so I don’t think Sony is making a controller that splits into two that transforms for PS move style of gaming, as shown in some recent patents. As for the announcement, Sony will mention 4k resolution display out but some games will not be running at 4K because our current consoles can display 1080p but not all the games run at 1080p. I would also like to see better PS Vita/ PS console interoperability. We all would like the price to be at a sweet spot for console which is $200 but I think at launch the PS4 will be $450. I also predict a new Uncharted and a new Resistance will be announced.

To start off, I think Sony will announce the PS4 and it will be called PS4. Sony will show what the actual console looks like, but they will not have hands-on demos for the people. They will also show off a new controller that is Dualshock 3 like. Also, Sony will not announce any price or release date for the PS4 until E3 2013. My gut is telling me that they will not announce any PS4 games until E3. They’ll just say that the third-party studios are working on a PS4 game but wont give out specific titles. As for length, I think the event will be about 45 minutes. Overall, I don’t expect much from the event but I do expect the PS4 to be announced. A crazy prediction I have is that the PS4 will not be announced but instead they will talk about new games that will come out this year. It’s unlikely, but a thought.

dI think that Playstation will be announcing the next Playstation console! However, my only concern is the fact that Sony would have to wait to actually release it. Why do I believe this? There is a large selection of games that are releasing for the current generation PS3 and many that were just released. If they go straight into a new console what will happen to the games that were just released? But then it hit me: they will most likely add backwards compatibility. Other things I predict about next Playstation console are: the controller will basically be a Vita with more buttons and features. (Like L3 and R3 and L2 and R2),faster downloads and more RAM,a new look for the XMB, HDMI included, and a much better looking design.

It’s pretty obvious that Sony will unveil the PS4. If they announce something else other than the PS4, it will be a big disappointment for the press, & also for the investors. The #1 thing that I’m concerned is the pricing. We all know that Sony will be beefing up the PS4 (faster processor, more RAM, more storage, etc.), but if they price it over $400, then it will be game over. Hopefully the pricing will be $400 or lower. Overall, I’m looking forward to the PlayStation Event.

    Ah yes, predicitions.
Sony has called in investors because they now have so much debt ($150 Billion) and dying platforms that they need more money to squander until they are bankrupt in 2015.Sony’s the hot air company full of overhype that won’t ever deliver.

Indeed, Sony has become the laughing stock of the industry. How the mighry have fallen.
